Monaccia d'Aullène, a heritage trail to discover the orii

Monacia d'Aullène is a charming village steeped in history, with its 18th-century house, traditional oven and mill and its orri. An oriu is a block of granite carved by erosion and adapted by man for different uses depending on the era: dwelling, grain silo, shelter for winter transhumance, refuge for bandits and then resistance fighters, or even graves. The Heritage Trail, which has been magnificently restored, allows you to discover many of them. A diversion from point 3 will take you to the most beautiful of them all, l'oriu di Grussetu, with its splendid view over the entire plain from Figari to Sardinia.

To a lesser extent for the diversions to l'oriu di Grussetu, the entire path is very clearly signposted. Don't take the first small bridge across the river and continue straight ahead.

The oriu de Cubia and the surrounding caves, occupied since prehistoric times, offer a glimpse of the exceptional archaeological heritage of the commune, which is still the oldest settlement in Corsica.

The diversions towards l'oriu di Grussetu descends slightly and crosses a small stream. The path then climbs steadily, always in the shade of the oak trees. At the top, the path bends to the left. On the right, in a dry stone wall, you can see a passage. Take it and follow the path until you reach granite rocks where you will have to do some climbing. From time to time, a cairn points the way. The two-part oriu di Grussetu was built inside an enormous rock overlooking the entire region.

The oriu at Iddastricciola, part of a typical agricultural complex, tells us about the importance of growing cereals, which were at the heart of the concerns and conflicts of past centuries.
