Piscia di Ghjaddu, a waterfall bursting out of a mineral wall

Around 1 kilometre from Lac de l'Ospédale, heading towards Zonza, is the start of the path that will take you to the Piscia di Ghjaddu waterfall, one of the most impressive in Corsica, with its spectacular 60-metre waterfall. A major tourist attraction in the south of the island, and popular in summer, the signposted path is easy all the way to the top of the waterfall.

From the car park, the path follows the right bank of the Petra Piana stream for around a kilometre. This is a pleasant area to walk, sheltered by Laricio pines. The path then joins a forest track that descends gently, before turning left to cross the stream. Here you'll find a huge area devoid of vegetation, covered with light-coloured rocks and then white rocks that burn in summer. After a slight climb, you reach the top of a ridge, from where you have a clear view of the coast and the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio. The path then descends the cliffside, through trees, scrub and rocks.

During your hike, you'll come across a number of strangely shaped rocks: the Tafoni. These are rocks carved out by erosion caused by rain and wind. Some were used by shepherds as shelters, and are known as Orii. This is the case of a huge rock, ‘A Sapara’, planted at the edge of the path. Just 5 minutes from the waterfall is the Sentinel Rock, a large granite boulder balanced on two rocks on the edge of a cliff.

Reaching the top of Piscia di Ghjaddu, which offers an impressive view of the waterfall, is not difficult, especially as the path is well signposted. However, the same cannot be said for the foot of the waterfall, where there are anchor points in the rock with cables to reach the top, and a steep descent along a rocky corridor. At this point the path has not been equipped and a sign marks the end of the protected area. You need to be very careful when you cross this boundary, but it is still possible to go down to take a few photos, provided you are well shod.
